A Russian composer, Sergei Taneyev was also a pianist, teacher, and music theorist. He was known as a more academic and conservative composer as compared to his contemporaries known as the The Five or The Mighty Handful (Mily Balakirev, César Cui, Modest Mussorgsky, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, and Alexander Borodin).
