Louisiana State University School of Music

The following information constitutes a brief summary of the music program and the audition requirements and is provided by the DEN as a courtesy. Be sure to contact the school directly for further details and for all application guidelines.

The LSU School of Music offers its students one of the nation’s most comprehensive academic programs, with degrees ranging from bachelor’s through doctorate and countless opportunities both on campus and in the community. As one of the designated Foundations of Excellence at LSU, faculty and students are nationally and internationally acclaimed as performers, educators, and researchers. Technology and facilities enable students to pursue their interests limited only by their imagination.

Undergraduate Piano Audition Requirements
Students should be prepared to play from memory three pieces as indicated:
For BA or BME or Minor:
• 1 work by J.S. Bach
• 1 work by Haydn, Mozart, or Beethoven
• 1 additional work of the applicant’s choice

For BM (performance and pedagogy):
• a prelude and fugue by J.S. Bach OR 2-3 movements of a dance suite by J.S. Bach
• a movement of a sonata by Haydn, Mozart, or Beethoven
• one additional work of the applicant’s choice

Graduate Piano Audition Requirements
MM/DMA Piano Performance:
1) Prelude and Fugue or other complete work by J.S. Bach (toccata, dance suite, etc)
2) A full sonata by Haydn, Mozart or Beethoven
3) TWO contrasting works from different periods (Romantic, Impressionist, Contemporary)

MM Piano Pedagogy:
1) A Prelude and Fugue by J.S. Bach
2) A full sonata by Haydn, Mozart or Beethoven
3) One contrasting work
